02 August 2007 :
the International Human Rights Organisation (IHRO) expressed its opposition to the death sentences issued by a Chandigarh court, India, to Jagtar Singh Hawara and Balwant Singh in the Beant Singh murder case as every execution violates the fundamental human right to life. While urging the Government of India to take immediate steps to abolish the death penalty, in furtherance of UN objective of ultimate abolition of capital punishment, the IHRO advocates added that death penalty is being used to silence the political resistance or to eliminate opponents. And for this purpose, they said, laws such as the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act are used where a fair trial is not at all possible.(Sources: Punjab Newsline, 01/08/2007)
