A Jamalpur court on March 30, 2026 sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in Dewanganj upazila, in a case linked to alleged dowry-related abuse.
Judge Mohammad Abdur Rahim of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 also fined the convict, Aminul Islam, Tk 1 lakh, according to court officials.
According to the prosecution, since Aminul married Sujana Akter in 2018, he had allegedly subjected her to repeated abuse over dowry demands.
On April 24, 2022, Aminul demanded Tk 20,000 from Sujana. When she refused, he assaulted and kicked her in the abdomen, leaving her critically injured, prosecutors said. She died the following day while undergoing treatment.
Sujana’s father, Suruj Mia, later filed a murder case with the Dewanganj Police Station.
The tribunal delivered the verdict after examining testimonies of 13 prosecution witnesses and considering the accused’s confessional statement given before a magistrate under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, in which he admitted to the crime, the prosecution added.
