BANGLADESH: HUSBAND SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR WIFE’S MURDER IN BHATARA

02 March 2026 :

A Dhaka court on February 25, 2026 sentenced Jibon Hossain Mukul to death for the murder of his wife, Fahima Begum, in the capital’s Bhatara area 13 years ago.
The verdicy was delivered by Judge Mohammad Shahidul Islam of Dhaka’s 10th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court.
The court also fined the convict Tk 10,000 and ordered authorities to arrest him to execute the sentence.
Mukul has been absconding since being released on bail and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
According to the case records, the couple married in 2012 and had a six-month-old son. Mukul, a furniture worker in Chattogram, had recently moved to Bhatara with his family.
Prosecutors said marital disputes arose over his alleged extramarital involvement and abusive behaviour.
On the night of September 17, 2013, the couple went to bed after dinner. The following morning, neighbours entered the house after hearing the baby crying and found Fahima dead.
Investigators later determined that she had been strangled with a scarf and that her hands were tied.
Her brother subsequently filed a murder case with Bhatara Police Station.
Police submitted the charge sheet in September 2014 and charges were framed in June 2015.
The court recorded testimony from eight of the 14 listed witnesses before delivering the verdict.
