06 May 2025 :

A Narayanganj court on May 6, 2025 sentenced four individuals to death and two others to life imprisonment in the murder case of hawker Zubair.
The verdict was delivered by Judge Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman Bhuiyan of Narayanganj Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-4.
Those sentenced to death are Iqbal alias Doctor, Swapon, Saimon, and Sani. The two sentenced to life imprisonment are Russel and Hasan. Hawker League leader Asad has been acquitted of all charges.
Inspector Mohammad Kaiyum Khan of Narayanganj Court Police confirmed the verdict, stating that the court has sentenced four accused to death and two others to life in prison in connection with the widely discussed Zubair murder case.
The incident took place on October 14, 2021, when Zubair was fatally stabbed over a dispute concerning setting up a street shop on the pavement in front of the Balaka petrol pump on Bangabandhu Road in Narayanganj city. Zubair was the son of Amzad Hossain of Uttar Masdair in Fatullah.
Following the incident, Zubair’s mother Mukta filed a case naming eight individuals, including Iqbal, and accusing five unidentified persons.
According to the case statement, Zubair had been working at Sadek’s shoe shop located on the pavement near St. Paul’s Church on Bangabandhu Road.
A dispute arose between Zubair and fellow hawker Swapon over occupying pavement space for setting up a shop. At one point, Swapon took Zubair to the front of the Balaka petrol pump and began slapping him. When Zubair protested, Iqbal, on the orders of hawker leader Asad, brought a sharp knife from the nearby Mohsin’s shop and stabbed Zubair, while the other accused also beat him before fleeing the scene.
Zubair was later taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
