BANGLADESH: 4 SENTENCED TO DEATH, 4 TO LIFE TERM IN JHENAIDAH

07 July 2025 :

A Jhenaidah court on July 7, 2025 sentenced four people to death and four others to life imprisonment for killing Sub-Inspector (SI) Mirajul Islam in 2011.
Jhenaidah Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 Judge Mahbub Alam delivered the verdict around 11:00 AM.
The individuals sentenced to death are Amzad Hossain, Liakat Hossain, and Akkas Ali, who live in Rajbari district, and Alam Sheikh, who resides in Faridpur district.
The people given life term imprisonment are Shahin, Mohammad Sagar, Nuru Kha from Faridpur district, and Monir Hossain from Jashore district.
Only Amzad Hossain is currently in custody, the others remain at large.
According to the case statement, on the night of August 23, 2011, a motorcycle accident took place in front of the Bus Owners' Association office in Jhenaidah town. When the riders saw police, they fled. The abandoned motorcycle was later identified as belonging to SI Mirajul Islam, who had been unreachable since that evening.
It was later confirmed that Mirajul had left after iftar for duty, carrying official documents, his licensed pistol, and ammunition. The next morning, on August 24, his body was discovered in a water-filled ditch near the Veterinary College. His hands and feet were tied, and he was still in uniform.
On that same day, police filed a murder case against unidentified attackers, suspecting that criminals might have killed him to steal his firearm and belongings.
After an extensive investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against 15 suspects on January 28, 2012. Following years of legal proceedings, the court on July 7 issued its verdict—sentencing eight and releasing the rest.
Jhenaidah Court Inspector Moktar Hossain confirmed that death row convict Amzad Hossain has been sent to district jail, while efforts are underway to find and arrest the remaining convicts.
