LIBYA: HANDS OFF CAIN, ALSO WE RESPONSIBLE FOR SAIF GADDAFI SENTENCE
July 28, 2015: The ruling of the Libyan court "Is the undesirable effect of the decision to intervene militarily in Libya, a decision that requires Italy and the international community to take responsibility for ensuring a smooth transition of the country to the rule of law that meets the international standards on human rights".
So stated Sergio D'Elia, Secretary of Hands Off Cain, to Adnkronos, after the decision of a Libyan court to sentence to death the second son of Gaddafi, Saif al-Islam, and other members of the former regime.
"We will inform the Italian authorities of our concerns - said D'Elia - and we will continue, togheter with the Foreign Minister Gentiloni, to monitor a difficult situation. Though knowing who the jailers of Saif al-Islam are, in fact we still have to understand with what kind of state authorities our government can compare with."
âBecause, actually, what is likely to create many obstacles to any intervention of Italy but also of the international community, particularly the European Union, is to understand which are the Libyan authorities we must confront to avoid that the capital punishment is actually carried outâ, says D'Elia.
According to the secretary of Hands Off Cain "It is indeed difficult to identify an interlocutor in a situation characterized by political fragmentation along ethnic and religious lines" in which "there is a government recognized by the UN, but there is also a part of the country that does not have international recognition, and is therefore difficult to understand with whom to deal."
