IRAN: 36 SUNNI KURDS EXECUTED
August 2, 2016: At least 36 Kurdish Sunni prisoners were hanged at dawn in Rajai Shahr Prison, Karaj, the Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran (HRANA) reported.
HRANA said that “the cases of at least seven of these prisoners are still in the primary stage, and their sentences cannot be executed before the end of trial procedures.”
On August 3, confessions from some of the prisoners were aired on Iran’s state-run television.
Families of some of the prisoners confirmed on August 3, that they had received the corpses of their loved ones, but the exact number of the executed is not yet confirmed.
Amnesty International says the continuation of capital punishment “demonstrates the Iranian authorities’ utter disregard for the right to life.”
Amnesty added that Iran is determined to continue their “staggering execution spree that saw nearly 1000 people put to death last year.”
