IRAN: PRISONER OF CONSCIENCE MOHAMMAD ALI TAHERI SENTENCED TO DEATH
June 29, 2015: The Iranian regime has sentenced prisoner of conscience Mohammad Ali Taheri to execution. He is the leader and founder of a spiritual group called Erfan-e-Halgheh (Mystical Ring). He was sentenced to death on the charges of âspreading corruption on earthâ via âdiverting people.â
Amnesty International issued an urgent action in May calling for immediate release of this political prisoner.
Mohammad Ali Taheri was first arrested in 2010 on charges of âacting against national securityâ but was released after 67 days of solitary confinement.
He was subsequently rearrested on May 4, 2011 and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment on the charges of blasphemy, 74 lashes for unlawful act (contact with the wrist of female patients during treatment), and 900M Tomans fine for intervention in medical treatment, acquiring illegitimate property, illegal distribution of audiovisual works and using scientific titles.
However in the summer of 2014 he was re-investigated on the charges of âcorruption on earth,â a charge he has already been acquitted from. His case was sent to Branch 26 of the regimeâs court for retrial and he was subsequently sentenced to death.
A few days ago, 12 individuals who have been promoting âErfan-e Halghehâ were sentenced to a total of 24 years in prison and 100M Tomans in fine. (Sources: iranfreedom.org, 29/30/2015)
