LEADING SUDANESE POET ON A DEATH SENTENCE
November 28, 2011: a tribunal held in a court in Sudan's Sinnar State sentenced 19 people allegedly affiliated with banned political party SPLM-N (Sudan People's Liberation Movement- North) to death.
Renowned Sudanese poet, journalist and human rights activist Abdel Moniem Rahma was among the 19 after he was arrested in the country's Blue Nile State in early September. He is being held in the notorious Kober prison in Khartoum.
"I found out about the order of execution from the internet, but I still can't believe it," said Rahma's wife Roman.
Human Rights Watch reported that the prisoners had been subjected to abuse and torture.

So far, SPLM-N has denied knowledge of their involvement in the on-going military action in Blue Nile State where the detainees were arrested. (Sources: Africa Review, 28/11/2011)
