June 2, 2026: June 2, 2026 - IRAN. Fathollah Avari (Fathollah Avary) executed in Hamedan on June 2
Avari is the eighteenth protester executed in relation to the January nationwide protests since 19 March.
According to the judiciary’s Mizan News Agency, Fathollah Avari, a 42-year-old protester arrested in relation to the protests in Hamedan on 18 January, has been hanged. The date and location of the execution have not been specified. IHR has established the location of his execution as Hamedan Central Prison. According to information obtained by Hengaw, Avari was executed at dawn on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, in Hamedan Central Prison. The execution was carried out without prior notification to his family, who were also denied a final visit.
The Iranian judiciary had sentenced Avari to death on charges of moharebeh (“waging war against God”), accusing him of killing a member of the security forces identified as Mohammad Javad Bakhshian during protests in Hamedan on January 8, 2026.
In a statement published on June 3, Mizan News Agency, the official media outlet of Iran’s judiciary, claimed that investigators had recovered the alleged murder weapon and clothing matching surveillance footage during a search of Avary’s residence. The report also claimed that Avari had confessed to the charges during interrogation.
The report states that “the Legal Medicine Organisation determined the cause of death to be a stab wound to the left flank and the subsequent medical complications arising from the injury.”
While the precise date of his arrest has not been disclosed, Fathollah’s forced confessions were aired by state media on 19 January. In the video, he looks visibly distressed and “confesses” to taking part in the protests on 8 and 9 January, and stabbing the policeman.
Since 19 March, at least eighteen people have been executed in relation to the January nationwide protests. https://iranhr.net/en/articles/8798/ https://www.en-hrana.org/january-2026-protests-fathollah-avari-executed/ https://hengaw.net/en/news/2026/06/article-23 (Source: IHR)
