BANGLADESH: MAN SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR KILLING CARETAKER OVER TK5 DEMAND
April 1, 2026: A Dhaka court on March 31, 2026 sentenced a man to death for killing a caretaker after asking him for Tk5 in the capital's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area. The verdict was delivered by Judge Md Nurul Islam of the 11th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court in Dhaka. The court also fined the convict Tk10,000. According to the prosecution, the victim, Julhas Mia from Cumilla's Homna, had worked as a caretaker at a residence on Indira Road in the Farmgate area for nearly 30 years. On 20 March 2018, at around 6:45pm, he went to a nearby cement shop, Raja & Co, where Kajol asked him for Tk5. When the victim delayed in giving the money, Kajol stabbed him above the navel with a sharp knife, leaving him critically injured. He collapsed on the road and was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Following the incident, the victim's son, Md Saiful, filed a murder case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. The next day, Kajol was taken to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, where he gave a confessional statement. On 9 June 2018, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Md Sujanul Islam, submitted the charge sheet to the court. The trial began on 30 September 2018 after charges were framed. The court recorded testimonies from 11 of the 15 witnesses during the trial. The convict, Md Kajol, has been in custody since 25 March 2018. He was produced in the court during the verdict and was sent back to prison with a conviction warrant. (Source: TBS, 31/03/2026)
