IRAN - Sirwan Aminpour, political asylum seeker, arrested in Norway and faces deportation to Iran
January 16, 2026: January 16, 2026 - IRAN. Sirwan Aminpour, a political asylum seeker, has been arrested in Norway and faces deportation to Iran.
According to information received by Hengaw, Sirwan Aminpour, a Kurdish political asylum seeker residing in Norway, is a 44-year-old married man and the father of one child, originally from the city of Mahabad.
As of the time of this report, Aminpour remains detained at Trandum and has not been transferred to another facility.
Aminpour left Iran in 2009 following his participation in protests during Iran’s Green Movement and subsequently applied for asylum in Norway. In addition to his political activities, he is also a member of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan. Should he be deported to Iran, his life would face a serious and immediate threat under the current circumstances.
Expressing deep concern over the possibility of Aminpour’s deportation and the risk of torture and inhuman treatment by Iran’s security apparatus, Hengaw calls on the Norwegian government to immediately halt the deportation process and to uphold international human rights conventions and principles in its treatment of asylum seekers. Hengaw has also urges international human rights bodies—particularly organizations responsible for refugee protection—to respond swiftly and take action to prevent his forced return to Iran.
