ITALY - Hands off Cain in Venice 2025

Hosted in the gardens of the Hotel Ausonia Hungaria, the first Corner on Human Rights and Restorative Justice was inaugurated on September 2. The initiative, collateral to the 82nd Venice Film Festival, was entitled “The Human Rights Barrier” and focused on a political case in Tanzania and the rights of “distant” women.

In Tanzania, a democratic and non-violent political leader is on death row on charges of “treason” for accusing the single party that has been in power for 60 years of corruption.

Hands off Cain is leading the Advocacy Campaign for Tundu Lissu, a key figure in the democratic opposition in Tanzania, survivor of several political attacks, and symbol of nonviolent resistance for legality and civil rights in Africa.

“Daughters of a Silent God” aims to remember the courage of women who are prisoners of physical, psychological, and social violence in conflict zones and under totalitarian regimes in their struggles for self-determination and for the right to childhood and dignity.

The two international focuses, dedicated to the right to personal freedom, draw attention to issues of humanity and participation of those who are increasingly ignored and left in the despair of a life that is no longer a life. Hands off Cain has been an international reference point for decades in the fight for the abolition of the death penalty and the promotion of restorative practices for the recomposition of wounded communities.

“The Human Rights Barrier” was organized by Sean Brocca and Ivan Friselle of “All in Venice,” Annalucia Russo of the “Ausonia Hungaria Hotel,” artist Fabrizio Frongia, and members of the board of “Hands off Cain – Spes contra Spem” Francesca Mambro, Patrizia Patrizi, Arianna Fioravanti, Porzia Addabbo, and Enrico Marignani.

The Corner will be open until the evening of September 4.
