BANGLADESH: BUS DRIVER, TWO EMPLOYEES TO DIE FOR KILLING NSU STUDENT
November 5, 2020: The driver and two other staff of a Hanif Paribahan bus on 1st November 2020 were sentenced to death for killing North South University student Saidur Rahman Payel. Saidur died after he was thrown into a canal in a critical condition as he was hit by the bus at Gazaria in Munshiganj in the early hours of 22 July 2018. The verdict was pronounced by Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 judge Abu Zafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman. All three convicts — driver Jamal Hossain, assistant Faisal Hossain and supervisor Md Jonny of the Hanif Paribahan bus — heard the verdict from the dock. Jamal and Faisal are siblings. Saidur, a fifth semester student, was found dead in a canal at Bhaterchar in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj on 23 July 2018. On 25 July 2018, Jonny and Jamal made statements at the court in which they said that the Dhaka-bound bus from Chattogram was stuck in a tailback at Bahterchar on Dhaka–Chattogram Highway in the early hours of July 22. At the time, Saidur got down from the bus to relieve himself and as the bus started moving when the traffic jam eased, Saidur started running to catch the bus, they had said in the statement, adding that the driver eventually stopped the bus but Saidur’s head was badly hit after it got stuck in the gate and he fell on the road. They told the court that Saidur became unconscious and was bleeding profusely from the mouth and noses, when the supervisor informed the bus driver of Saidur’s condition. After a short discussion among themselves, the trio, without taking Saidur to hospital, threw him into a canal from a bridge at around 4:30am when he was still breathing.
