MALAYSIA: JOHOR’S SULTAN PARDONS ELEVEN DEATH ROW PRISONERS
March 5, 2015: the Johor Pardon’s Board, chaired by Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, granted a full pardon to a man on death row and commuted the death sentence of 10 others to life imprisonment, which carries a maximum term of 20 years.
The 29-year-old man who got the full pardon was 17 when he murdered a friend during a camping trip in 2004.
The ten other death row inmates, who had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment, were sentenced to death for various crimes, including drug-related offences and murder.
On 23 March 2015, Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar was crowned the fifth sultan of modern Johor. Sultan Ibrahim and the Johor Pardon’s Board can only grant a royal pardon for Johorean prisoners. (Sources: themalaymailonline.com, 23/03/2015)
