INDONESIA: SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS DEATH SENTENCE FOR DRUG LORD FREDDY BUDIMAN
September 9, 2014: The Supreme Court of Indonesia decided to uphold the death sentence for Freddy Budiman, a convicted drug lord who ran an ecstasy ring from behind bars.
The ruling, posted on the courtâs website, said judges rejected the appeal of âFreddy Budiman alias Budi bin Nanang Hidayat.â
A spokesman for the Attorney Generalâs Office, Tony Spontana, said that Freddy would not be executed just yet, as he might file a request for a case review with the Supreme Court again or ask for clemency from the president.
âThereâs a special regulation for convicts on death row,â Tony was quoted as saying by news portal jpnn.com. âIf both these legal steps are rejected, then we can carry out the execution.â
However, a spokesman for the Supreme Court disagreed. Quoted by Detik.com, Ridwan Mansyur said that Mondayâs ruling was final and binding, and even if Freddy still wanted to ask for a case review or clemency, this should not prevent the AGO from picking a date for Freddyâs execution.
