LEBANON: FIVE SENTENCED TO DEATH OVER 2008 ARMY ATTACK
August 6, 2013: In Lebanon, the Judicial Council sentenced five people to death – one posthumously and the others in absentia – and more than a dozen others to years of hard labor over a 2008 deadly bomb attack targeting the Army.
The sentencing brings to conclusion a trial that has been going on since the fatal bomb attack in Tripoli’s Al-Tall neighborhood in August 2008, which killed 13 people, including 10 soldiers, and wounded 46 others, 37 from the Army.
In a ruling that cannot be overturned, the council issued death sentences for Abdel-Ghani Jawhar, Obeid Abdel-Qafil, Osama Shehabi, Ghazi Abdallah and Abdel-Rahman Awad. Jawhar died in Syria last year. The other four men remain at large. (Sources: The Daily Star, 07/08/2013)
