PAKISTAN: GOVT FAILS TO SEND PROPOSAL ON COMMUTING SENTENCES TO PRESIDENT
July 17, 2008: the Pakistani Government has not forwarded a formal proposal for commuting all death sentences into life imprisonment terms to President Pervez Musharraf, despite an announcement by the Prime Minister nearly a month ago, the country's Attorney General said. Attorney General Malik Qayyum said: "There was just a proposal. It is yet to be formulated into a concrete package for the President's approval." Qayyum told The News daily: "The proposal was being considered by the law ministry when the Supreme Court took suo motu notice of it. Now the matter is sub judice."
