TURIN, ITALY. PRESENTATION OF “THE DEATH PENALTY WORLDWIDE 2005 REPORT”
July 26, 2005: Hands Off Cain, together with the ‘Adelaide Aglietta’ association presented the 2005 edition of the annual Hands Off Cain Report: “The Death Penalty Worldwide”.
Bruno Mellano, Hands Off Cain board member and Secretary of the Adelaide Aglietta organisation, organised the Press Conference, which saw the participation of Laura Morra di Cella, Senegal’s consul in Turin.
Mellano declared: “This year the report is dedicated to Abdoulaye Wade, President of the Republic of Senegal, who, after having declared illegal the practice of female genital mutilations in 1999 and having nominated in 2001 a female minister for the first time in Senegal’s history, abolished the death penalty for all crimes in Senegal on December 10, 2004 in concomitance with the International Human Rights Day and with the backing of the country’s national assembly. Senegal thus became the third Muslim majority country to have totally abolished the death penalty.
The death penalty report, now in its eighth edition, has the purpose of sensitising the world on the importance of the international campaign to obtain from the United Nation’s General Assembly a resolution for a universal moratorium on the death penalty with view to complete abolition.” (Sources: HOC, 27/07/2005)
