COVID EMERGENCY: RITA BERNARDINI IS ON HUNGER STRIKE FOR AMNESTY, INDULT, SPECIAL EARLY RELEASE

12 November 2020 :

From midnight on November 10, 2020, the President of Hands Off Cain Rita Bernardini has embarked on a hunger strike aimed at the Government and Parliament to address what is happening in prisons. Rita Bernardini motivated her initiative as follows: "What is certain is that the behavior of the Government and Parliament is irresponsible in the face of the spread of the pandemic in prisons. Amnesty, pardon, special early release (draft law of the Radical Party and Hands Off Cain presented by Roberto Giachetti also in the form of an amendment to the " Decreto Legge Ristori "), substantial changes to the Ristori decree which restores very little inmates and prisoners, but something - immediately - they have to do. First of all, the detained population must be significantly DECREASED. "
Italy is among the European countries that have reported the highest number of people infected with Covid-19 within the walls of prisons. The numbers coming from the Dap (Prison Department) and updated on the evening of 8 November speak of 537 positive Covid among inmates and 728 infected among staff.
“The virus has even penetrated into sections of 41 bis (but wasn't it the safest place?) of the Opera prison. Choose, act, fight. live, let live. With the weapons of nonviolence”.
Umberto Baccolo and Delfina Unno Pastalunghi, of “Folsom Prison Blues”, have launched a particular chain of support for the hunger strike organized by Rita Bernardini on Facebook.
