BANGLADESH: 4 GET DEATH PENALTY, 5 GET LIFE TERM

In Bangladesh, a Chittagong court sentenced four people to death for killing a lawyer’s mother in Chandanaish upazila of Chittagong on November 10, 2009.
The court also gave life term imprisonment to five other accused in the case, and fined them Tk 40,000 each, in default of which they will have to serve one more year in prison. Four other accused were acquitted.
Third Additional District and Session Court Judge Hla Mong passed the order after eight of the accused were produced before it, said court sources.
The rest five accused are on the run, they said.
The convicts who were given the death penalty are — Abu Mokaram, Shah Alam, Johara Khatun, and Shahidul Islam.
The convicts who were given life term imprisonment are — Md Arif, Mintu Das, Md Yunus, Saiful Islam, and Jahangir Alam. The acquitted are Khorshed Alam, Monoara Begum, Abu Salek and Kamrunnahar.
Khorshedul Alam Sikder, lawyer of the plaintiff Additional Public Prosecutor Nazrul Islam Sentu, said the convicts killed Nazrul’s mother Chemon Ara Begum, 58, at a farmland in South Muradabad of Chandanaish upazila following a previous enmity.
