INDONESIA: SOME 100 DRUG OFFENDERS SENTENCED TO DEATH THIS YEAR

July 9, 2020:

Indonesian National Police Chief Idham Azis said on 2 July 2020 that around 100 drug offenders across the country have been given capital punishment since the beginning of this year.
"I have just been informed by the director of the anti-narcotics division, that in the current period of 2020, around 100 (drug offenders) have been sentenced to death for drug cases across the country," he said during a drug destruction ceremony at the Jakarta Metro Police Headquarters in South Jakarta.
On 2 July morning, the Jakarta Metro Police destroyed illicit drugs including 1.2 tons of methamphetamine, 410 kilograms of marijuana and 30,000 ecstasy pills seized during the period of May and June this year.
Azis expressed hope that those who have received death penalties be executed as soon as possible.
"Hopefully, (they) will soon be executed to give them deterrent effect," he said.
The police chief also called on his subordinates and other relevant authorities to take stern measures against drug trafficking to stop the spread of drugs in the country.
