A measure to repeal South Dakota's death penalty failed today after a vote at the statehouse in Pierre. The South Dakota House Health Committee voted 8 to 5 against HB 1245 which would have changed all death sentence convictions in the state to "life in prison without parole". The same bill had been approved on Feb. 10 (see) by the he House State Affairs Committee.
