Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Judge Richard Luce sentenced John Lee Hampton, 35, black, to death for the June 10, 2007 rape and murder of Lashonda McKinnes, 25. A Pinellas County jury recommended 9-3 the death penalty on June 26, 2009. He said he accidentally killed McKinnes because she came after him while he riffled through her possessions. The defendant was on probation for failing to register as a sex offender in Georgia when he murdered McKinnes.(source: St. Petersburg Times, 19/02/2010)
