In North Carolina, U.S. District Judge Robert J. Conrad Jr. imposed the death penalty on Alejandro Enrique Ramirez Umana, 25, latino. On April 28, 2010 (see) a federal jury unanimously recommended that sentence on charges related to the December 2007 murders of Ruben Garcia Salinas and his brother, Manuel Garcia Salinas.  Umana is the first member of the MS-13 international gang to be sentenced to death in the United States. MS-13, also known as La Mara Salvatrucha, is an abbreviation derived from the Spanish word "mara," which means "gang." Salvatrucha combines "Salva" (for Salvadoran) and "trucha" (for "fear us").
