BANGLADESH: ONE GETS DEATH SENTENCE FOR KILLING TEEN IN KISHOREGANJ
November 11, 2024: A Kishoreganj court on November 6, 2024 sentenced a man to death and two others to life imprisonment for the murder of a teenager over a mobile phone at Pakundia upazila in 2008. The verdict was delivered by Judge Fatema Jahan Swarno of the Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court-3. The death sentence was handed to Faruk Mia, 36, of Barabar village in the upazila. The two others sentenced to life imprisonment are Riaz Uddin, and Nurul Islam, both from the same village. These two defendants remain at large. According to the case details, on September 3, 2008, 14-year-old Abul Hossain was out with a friend when Faruk allegedly snatched a Nokia mobile phone from him. An argument ensued, during which Faruk fatally stabbed Abul to death. The victim's mother, Nasima Khatun, filed a case with Pakundia police station and the accused were later arrested and confessed to the crime before a magistrate. After a lengthy trial, the court found Faruk guilty under sections 302/34 of the Penal Code, sentencing him to death along with a fine of Tk 10,000. Riaz Uddin and Nurul Islam were sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Tk 5,000 each, with an additional three months of imprisonment if they fail to pay. State Prosecutor Abdul Salam represented the prosecution while Advocates Shekhar Chandra Sarkar and ABM Lutfur Rashid Rana defended the absconding accused. (Source: Daily Observer, 06/11/2024)
