BANGLADESH: 11 TO DIE FOR KILLING SCHOOL STUDENT IN JOYPURHAT 21YRS AGO
February 26, 2024: A court in Joypurhat on January 31, 2024 sentenced 11 people to death for killing a ninth grader in Sadar upazila 21 years ago. The verdict was handed down by Additional Sessions Court-2 Judge Abbas Uddin. The court also fined the convicts Tk 50,000 each. Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Uday Singh acknowledged the matter. The convicts were identified as Bedarul Islam Bedin, Sarwar Hossain Sumon, Mashiur Rahman Ershad, Monowar Hossain Mansur, Nazrul Islam and Rana, Shahi, Tutul, Sujon, Rahim and Dablu – all are the residents of different areas of the district. According to the case documents, on June 28, 2002, Moazzem Hossain, 16, the son of Fazlur Rahman of Pramanikpara, left home. The convicts then kidnapped Moazzem from outside a cinema hall, took him to an area near the local graveyard and injured him with sharp weapons and sticks. They then left him unconscious beside the Jamalganj road. Moazzem died in hospital that night. The next day, Moazzem’s father as a plaintiff filed a murder case with Sadar Police Station. On October 29, 2003, investigating officer Mahbub Alam submit a report in the case. After a 21-year long trial, the court finally delivered the verdict on January 31. (Source: Observer, 31/01/2024)
