ALGERIA: CONDANNATE A MORTE 49 PERSONE PER IL LINCIAGGIO DI UN PRESUNTO PIROMANE

Un tribunale di primo grado di Algeri il 24 novembre 2022 ha condannato a morte 49 persone giudicandole colpevoli dell'omicidio di Djamel Ben Ismail, un pittore di 38 anni sospettato di aver appiccato degli incendi che hanno devastato la regione settentrionale di Cabilia nell'agosto 2021.
All'epoca dei fatti contestati, le fiamme avevano provocato la morte di almeno 90 persone, compresi i soldati che cercavano di domarle. La vittima – secondo quanto riferito dall'agenzia statale algerina Aps e dagli avvocati della difesa – era stata scambiata ingiustamente per il responsabile degli incendi, quando in realtà Ismail si era offerto volontario per aiutare a spegnere i roghi.
Il pittore si era costituito in una stazione di polizia nel villaggio Arbaa Nath Irathen, dopo aver saputo dei sospetti che si erano diffusi sul suo conto. Ma questo non era bastato per sfuggire al linciaggio: l'uomo era stato trascinato via dalla stazione con la forza dalla folla inferocita che chiedeva la sua testa, poi picchiato a morte e bruciato nella piazza principale del villaggio.
In quell'occasione, secondo quanto emerso dal processo, erano stati feriti anche gli stessi agenti di polizia che tentavano di proteggere l'artista.
Le indagini degli inquirenti hanno riguardato circa un centinaio di persone: oltre ai 49 condannati alla pena capitale ci sono state 28 condanne dai due ai 12 anni di reclusione e 17 assoluzioni.
Il caso è stato uno dei più seguiti nel Paese soprattutto per il clamore mediatico scatenato in seguito alla diffusione dei video del linciaggio subito da Ismail sui social network da parte di alcuni utenti.
Secondo quanto riporta il Guardian, la difesa degli imputati ha sostenuto che ci sono state delle ragioni politiche alla base delle sentenze e che le confessioni sono state estorte sotto tortura.
Cinque persone sono state condannate sia per il coinvolgimento nell'assassinio di Ismail sia perché appartenenti al "MAK", il movimento indipendentista della regione di Cabilia. Tra queste il leader del gruppo separatista, Ferhat M’henni, residente in Francia, accusato anche di essere il mandante degli incendi dolosi.
