ARABIA SAUDITA: ALI AL-NIMR SCARCERATO DOPO QUASI DIECI ANNI

Un giovane saudita è stato scarcerato il 27 ottobre 2021 dopo aver trascorso quasi un decennio in carcere in un caso che ha attirato l'attenzione internazionale dal momento che fino a poco tempo fa il ragazzo figurava come condannato a morte per reati di opinione risalenti a quando era minorenne.
Il caso di Ali al-Nimr ha anche attirato l'attenzione perché suo zio era l’influente religioso saudita sciita Nimr al-Nimr, giustiziato nel Regno nel gennaio 2016 in un'esecuzione di massa di 47 persone. Era un forte critico del governo e un leader chiave delle proteste sciite nell'Arabia Saudita orientale del 2011, che chiedevano maggiori diritti nel Paese a maggioranza sunnita e un trattamento equo.
La condanna a morte di Ali al-Nimr era stata commutata a febbraio in seguito al decreto reale, emesso lo scorso anno, che ha messo fine alla pena di morte per i reati commessi da minorenni. Il decreto ordina ai pubblici ministeri di riesaminare i casi ed estinguere le pene di coloro che hanno già scontato una detenzione massima di 10 anni per reati commessi a un’età inferiore ai 18 anni, sebbene i reati legati al terrorismo possano tecnicamente essere puniti in modo diverso.
Ali Al-Nimr era stato condannato con l'accusa di aver partecipato, quando era ancora minorenne, alle proteste attuate dagli sciiti. Era stato arrestato nel 2012 all'età di 16 anni.
Human Rights Watch ha affermato che il giovane era stato vagamente accusato di attacco alle forze di sicurezza, nonché di "rottura della fedeltà al sovrano" e per aver "pronunciato slogan contro lo stato". Era stato condannato a morte dal Tribunale penale speciale di Riyadh, che gestisce i processi per terrorismo.
Nel 2014 il tribunale aveva condannato a morte al-Nimr e altri due minorenni, Dawood al-Marhoun e Abdullah al-Zaher. Tutti e tre i giovani della minoranza sciita dell'Arabia Saudita hanno ricevuto la contemporanea commutazione delle condanne a morte all'inizio di quest'anno.
I tre giovani sono stati condannati a 10 anni di reclusione, tenendo conto del tempo già trascorso dietro le sbarre.
Il padre di Al-Nimr, Mohammed, ha confermato il rilascio del figlio su Twitter. Un video di un barbuto al-Nimr vestito di bianco che abbraccia una donna che sembra essere sua madre al suo arrivo a casa è circolato ampiamente sui social media il 27 ottobre.
Il padre di Al-Nimr ha espresso gratitudine a Dio e ai sostenitori della sua famiglia, nonché al Re e al Principe ereditario in un tweet che includeva una foto dei due reali.
"Oltre a Dio, gratitudine va al Custode delle Due Sacre Moschee per la sua storica decisione dell'aprile 2020, che ha stabilito di interrompere le condanne a morte ed esecuzioni di minorenni", ha scritto. "Possa Dio ricompensare lui e il principe ereditario".
