MALAYSIA: THREE MURDERERS TO HANG AFTER FINAL APPEALS DISMISSED
January 18, 2019: Three men lost their final appeals against their death sentences for murder convictions at the Federal Court in Kota Kinabalu on 15 January 2019. The five-panel judges chaired by Justice Tan Sri Richard Malanjum, who sat together with Justices Zaharah Ibrahim, Balia Yusof Haji Wahi, Tengku Maimum Tuan Mat and Nallini Pathmanathan made the unanimous decision to affirm the death sentences of Mohd Halid Mappa, 48, Alsar Imagu, 38, and Arjie Serenio, 31. Mohd Halid, Alsar and Arjie were sentenced to death by the High Court on May 30, 2012, in 2014 and December 31, 2016 respectively after they were found guilty as charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Mohd Halid was convicted of killing a woman at an unnumbered house in Kampung Langkabong, Tongod on May 5, 2009. Alsar was convicted of killing a man at a compound behind a shop at Bandar Sandakan on August 1, 2013 while Arjie was convicted of murdering his workmate near a house at a construction site at Kampung Sunsuron in Tambunan on January 24, 2014. The three men had appealed to the Appellate Court against their conviction and death sentences but their appeals were dismissed on September 26, 2017 in the case of Mohd Halid and Alsar and March 7, 2018 in the case of Arjie.
