TUNISIA: MARZOUKI CONDEMNS EGYPT DEATH SENTENCES, CALLS FOR ABOLISHING CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
March 25, 2014: The President of Tunisia, Moncef Marzouki, implicitly condemned the 529 death sentences handed down by an Egyptian court on Monday (March 24), saying that he opposes the capital punishment and advocates its abolishment.
In an interview with the Kuwaiti Al-Qabas newspaper Tuesday, Marzouki said "when I arrived at the presidential palace in Kartaj, I found 240 death sentences against individuals who were left between life and death. With a mere signature, I turned the sentences to life imprisonment."
"I am an advocate of abolishing the capital punishment," he added, citing a Quranic verse.
"If you kill one self, you would be killing the entire humanity," he said, in reference to Quran. (Sources: middleeastmonitor.com, 25/03/2014)
