USA - Virginia. Legislation to abolish death penalty advances in Senate.

26 January 2021 :

Legislation to abolish death penalty advances in Virginia Senate.
Legislation to abolish the death penalty in Virginia (SB 1165) cleared its 1st legislative hurdle Monday, passing out of the Senate Judiciary Committee on 10-4 vote, with 9 Democrats and 1 Republican supporting the measure. Sen. Scott Surovell (D) sponsored the bill that, if signed into law, would abolish the death penalty including for those currently under a death sentence. Sen. Bill Stanley (R) is the chief co-patron of the legislation. Gov. Northam has publicly supported the current bill to abolish the death penalty.
The bill is not heading to the Senate floor just yet. First it's going to the Senate Finance Committee, where senators will weigh the budgetary impacts of imprisoning people indefinitely versus going through all the legal steps necessary before an inmate is executed.
Monday’s vote suggests the measure has significantly more support than last year, when it failed to make it out of committee in either the House or the Senate. The only Republican to support the bill, Sen. Bill Stanley, R-Franklin, did not speak on the measure.
There are currently 2 men on death row in Virginia. Their executions have not yet been scheduled.
Virginia carried out the last execution in 2017.
