Morocco: the murderer of a deputy sentenced to death

08 June 2018 :

January 16, 2018: A local Moroccan politician was sentenced to death Monday night for premeditated murder after the death of deputy Abdellatif Merdas, shot in front of his home in March 2017 in a case that unites sex and money.
The deputy's widow was sentenced to life imprisonment, his nephew to 30 years imprisonment, and a relative of the widow, presented as a "psychic.", to 20 years in prison after a trial before the Court of appeal by Casablanca, according to the Ministry of Justice website.
Death sentences are still pronounced in Morocco, but a moratorium has been effectively enforced since 1993, and its abolition is in discussion.
Merdas Abdellatif, 53-year-old, a member of the constitutional union (UC, Liberal Party) in the Casablanca region, died on March 7th, 2017 after being hit by three shots while he was in his car in front of his villa in Casablanca.
Three people were arrested a few days later. The nephew, interrogated in Turkey, joined them in prison later.
The investigation, confirmed by video surveillance and telephone interceptions among the suspects, revealed that the murder had no political character and its motivations were "sex, money and revenge", these are the terms used by the Attorney General.
The widow, encouraged by the prediction of the psychic, wanted to take revenge on the violence suffered by her husband, according to the minutes of the hearing published by the local press.
Her lover, a local politician, decided to intervene with the help of her nephew, hoping to get some of the properties that she would inherit, according to the same.
