IRAN - Ehsan Nemati was executed in Karaj Central Prison on October 28. The torture of interrupted executions

17 November 2020 :

Ehsan Nemati was executed in Karaj Central Prison on October 28.
According to reports received by the Human Rights Center of No to prison, no to execution, on Wednesday, October 28th a prisoner by the name of Ehsan Nemati was executed in Karaj Central Prison. The 41-year-old prisoner and father of two young girls was arrested in 2017 on charges of armed robbery of a bank in which one person was killed. A reliable source said that Ehsan Nemati was taken to the gallows of his execution at least twice before his sentence was carried out. A reliable source said Ehsan Nemati had already undergone two "interrupted executions" before the final one today. In Iran, hangings are not carried out with the "merciful" trap door system, which involves instant death by fracturing the neck, but by gradually lifting the condemned man either by hand or with a winch, causing a conventional "death by asphyxiation". In the "interrupted executions", after a start of raising, the condemned person is lowered, the noose is twisted, and is taken back to the cell. This torture procedure is practiced in all Iranian prisons. The source added that Ehsan had lost some of his mental balance after returning from the gallows of his execution in Karaj Central Prison. Until now, his execution has not been announced by any of the state-run medias.
