HANDS OFF CAIN RESPONDS TO THE IRANIAN EMBASSY’S DENIAL OF THE EXECUTION OF MINORS IN IRAN

15 March 2006 :

Hands Off Cain replies to a note sent it by the Iranian embassy in Rome in which it denyed the application of the death penalty to minors.
“With this note Iran confirms its ambiguous policies. The mullahs’ regime uses comforting language towards international observers with regards to its internal human rights situation whilst proudly spreading facts within the country which represent grave human rights violations in the face of international laws.
That death sentences and executions have been meted out to minors in Iran in 2005 is a fact confirmed by Iranian newspapers controlled by the regime.
Such is also the case for Nazanin, a minor girl sentenced to death for having killed one of two men attempting to rape her, a fact denied by the Iranian embassy but reported by the national daily “Etimaad”, published in Tehran.
This behaviour is certainly not new. Last year, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child criticised Iran for having executed minors in blatant violation of the assurances it had given regarding the termination of the practice. With this note Iran is only trying to hide its shameful deeds. It is time for the international community to not let itself be fooled, to request transparency and to denounce the mullahs’ regime for its serious violations of fundamental human rights.”
