DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO. SOLDIER SUMMARILY EXECUTED

a soldier from the Democratic Republic of Congo was summarily executed in a stadium before hundreds of people for murder on the orders of a senior officer, local authorities said.
The unnamed soldier, tied to a tree with his hands behind his back, was shot in the stadium at Sake, 25km from Goma, in the eastern province of Nord-Kivu, the day after his arrest.
"When the troops shot him, the crowd applauded," one witness said.
He had been arrested for killing a civilian in "a personal conflict", in the village of Kimoka, near Sake, local chief Nicolas Kiganja said.
"The military commander at Sake camp ordered his execution, after demonstrations of anger by local people who have suffered the exactions of the troops for months," he added.
