COUNCIL OF EUROPE: BELARUS URGED TO ABOLISH DEATH PENALTY

10 June 2009 :

the Council of Europe's (CE) Deputy Secretary General, Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, expressed hope for "a display of political will" by the Belarusian authorities regarding abolition of capital punishment.
"Abolition of capital punishment is not an issue for a referendum, but a display of political will by the authorities," she said. "It was said that the given issue will probably be put to referendum. But the results might not be positive in the given case," she said.
