BANGLADESH: 9 TO WALK GALLOWS FOR KILLING NARAIL AL MAN

A special tribunal in Khulna sentenced nine people including a Union Parishad chairman to death for killing Awami League activist Probhas Roy in Narail last year.
Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge MA Rob handed down the verdict in presence of all the accused and also fined Tk 50,000 each, reports our Kushtia correspondent.
The convicts are Shahidur Rahman Mina, 52, and his brother Md Ilius Mina, 56, Ashikur Mina, 22, Rassel Mina, 30, Bashar Mollah, 30, Rabiul Mollah, 25, Enayet Mollah, 53, Yasin Mollah, 24, and Mamun Mia, 28. They are residents of Mirapara village in Narail Sadar upazila.
According to the prosecution, Probhas Roy, an AL activist of Bhadrabila union Parishad in Sadar, had worked for AL nominated candidate Khairuzzaman Fakir in UP election held in January 2017.
In the election, independent candidate Shahidur Rahman Mina, who was also an influential AL leader, won the elections.
Over the issue, supporters of Mina chopped Probhas with sharp weapons at Mirapara Bazar just after finishing his visit to Sarswati Puja on the evening on February 1, 2017.
Injured Probash was taken to Narail Sadar Hospital where doctors referred him to Jessore Medical College Hospital (JMCH) but he died on the way.
Totul Rani, wife of Probhas, filed a case accusing the nine people with Narail Sadar Police Station on next day of the murder.
On February 22 of the same year, Sub-Inspector of the police station Bhabatosh Sarker, also investigation officer of the case, submitted charge sheet to chief judicial magistrate in Narail.
Later, the case was sifted to Speedy Trail Tribunal in Khulna.
