INDIA: SUPREME COURT OKAY WITH DEATH TO ABDUCTORS

January 27, 2010: the Indian Supreme Court asked judges to punish kidnappers hard, mentioning that the law allows awarding death sentence in exceptional cases of kidnapping for ransom even if they did not involve murder.
"Statistics reveal that kidnapping for ransom has become a lucrative and thriving industry all over the country which must be dealt with in the harshest possible manner and an obligation rests on courts as well," a Bench comprising Justices H S Bedi and J M Panchal said. Justices Bedi and Panchal said this while upholding the death sentences of Vikram and Jasvir Singh. They were sentenced by the Punjab and Haryana high court for kidnapping Abhi Verma, 16, in Punjab in 2005, and killing him when no ransom was paid. (Sources: DNAIndia.com, timesofindia, 28/01/2010)
