The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit has overturned the federal death sentence imposed on Azibo Aquart in Connecticut, ruling that the prosecution improperly vouched for the testimony of one of its witnesses in the penalty-phase of Aquart's trial.

11 December 2018 :

State's last death row inmate resentenced to life in prison. Richard Roszkowski, the last of the eleven prisoners on death row when the Connecticut Supreme Court declared the state's death-penalty statute unconstitutional, has been resentenced to life without possibility of release. During his Thursday hearing 51-year-old Roszkowski said he is remorseful for what happened that day. Roszkowski was convicted in 2009 of felony murder charges for fatally shooting 39-year-old Holly Flannery, her daughter, Kylie, 9, and 38-year-old Thomas Gaudet in in 2006. Police said Roszkowski stalked Flannery after she broke up with him and falsely believed she and Gaudet were romantically involved. His sentence was converted as a result of a 2015 state Supreme Court decision that declared the death penalty unconstitutional.

22 June 2018 :

Lazale Ashby, a former death row inmate, was resentenced to life in prison without parole for the 2002 slaying of a woman, 21-year-old Elizabeth Rodriguez. Ashby, 33, Black, had his sentence converted by the Hartford Superior Court as a result of the state Supreme Court decision to end capital punishment. Ashby, who was convicted in 2008 (see January 31 and March 28), raped and strangled Elizabeth Garcia inside her apartment. Ashby also is serving a 25-year sentence for a fatal shooting that took place in 2003. The state Supreme Court ruled the death penalty unconstitutional in 2015. 9 of the state's 11 former death row inmates have since been resentenced to life in prison.

10 May 2018 :

Todd Rizzo, 38, White, was resentenced to life in prison for the 1997 death of a 13-year-old boy, Stanley Edwards IV. Rizzo is one of several death row inmates whose sentences were revised after the state Supreme Court ruled in 2015 the death penalty was unconstitutional. Rizzo was 18 when prosecutors say he lured Edwards to his backyard and struck him with the sledgehammer 13 times. He later told police he wanted to know what it felt like to kill someone.

26 April 2018 :

In a brief hearing Wednesday, Hartford Superior Court Judge Edward J. Mullarkey resentenced Jessie Campbell III (38, Black) to life in prison without the possibility of release because the state has since abolished the death penalty. Judge Mullarkey sentenced Campbell to death on Aug. 16, 2007 (see) for the Aug. 26, 2000, murder of Desiree Privette, 18, and her friend and Campbell’s estranged girlfriend, LaTaysha Logan, 20. A third woman, Privette's aunt, Carolyn Privette, was wounded but survived the shooting. In 2015 and in 2016, the Supreme Court ruled that a 2012 state law abolishing capital punishment for future crimes must be applied to the men who still faced execution for earlier killings. Campbell is the sixth death-row prisoner to be resentenced following the two Connecticut Supreme Court's rulings declaring the state's death penalty unconstitutional. Five other prisoners who were on death row at the time of that decision have yet to be formally resentenced.

10 May 2018 :

Waterbury Superior Court Judge Roland D. Fasano resentenced Sedrick Cobb to two life terms without the possibility of release as Connecticut continues to dismantle its death row. Cobb, 54, Black, described as a serial rapist, had been sentenced to death on August 13, 1991 for kidnapping, raping and killing 22-year-old Julia Ashe on Dec. 16, 1989.
